Lactation Cookies For Nursing Mamas

Nursing mamas have it hard out there! And gosh dang it, we deserve some cookies every once in a while! Or every day. You know, whatever floats your boat! These lactation cookies are a Godsend!

If you aren’t a nursing mama, but you know one, please promptly make her these cookies and bring them to her stat! And do yourself a favor and save a few to chow on later. Or you can just make them for yourself because YUM.

PSA:

These cookies WILL NOT make you lactate if you are not a person that just gave birth to a small human. My husband can attest to that! He’s definitely a believer in these cookies. He thinks they are absolutely delicious and he has yet to start lactating. Fingers crossed!

The added ingredients in these cookies that qualify them as lactation cookies are the oats, coconut oil, ground flax seed, and brewer’s yeast. All of these things are galactagogues. Galactagogues are foods or substances that promote lactation and help to boost milk supply in nursing mothers.

Along with helping a nursing mama with their milk supply, these are also just good for a weary mama’s soul! Every time I was pregnant, I would make a batch of these before my due date, freeze them in individual sized cookie dough portions, and keep them in the freezer until after my little one graced us with his or her presence.

Once our little nug was here, I would bake two or three of these fresh every day. Some days those cookies were the only things that would get me through! Of course, my husband would also have me bake an extra one for him because he loved them so much.

I promise, everyone will devour them! Not just the nursing mamas.

Pro Tip:

One of my favorite things is to make a batch of these, bake about 4 of them, freeze the rest in individual dough portions, and then bring the baked cookies and the frozen dough balls to a new mama that just gave birth to a little one.

They are such a thoughtful way to show a new mama that you’ve been thinking about her and want to bless her with some chocolate chip love!

Now fire up that mixer, grab some oats, and go to town!

How To Make Lactation Cookies:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  2. Use food processor to grind oats into powder.

This is the food processor I use. It’s awesome for the price!

3. In a large mixing bowl, combine oat powder, flour, brewer’s yeast, flaxseed meal, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix.

This is the brewer’s yeast I use:

4. In stand mixer, mix softened butter and coconut oil until smooth.

5. Add sugar and brown sugar. Mix until well combined.

6. Mix in egg, egg yolk, and vanilla until incorporated.

7. Add in half of dry ingredients, mix on low until combined, and then add other half and mix.

8. Add milk and mix until incorporated.

9. Stir in chocolate chips.

10. Bake 10-12 minutes for gooey cookies or until edges are just starting to brown (14 minutes if frozen).

Optional: Use a cookie scoop to divide out portions of the cookie dough and freeze them so they are ready to bake, already in individual portions. This is an awesome way to gift some to a new mother!

Here is a great set of cookie scoops. I would highly recommend investing in cookie scoops rather than always having to roll your dough into balls!

11. Transfer to cooling wrack or paper towel and allow to cool.

Pro Tip: Add extra chocolate chips to the tops of the cookies when they first come out of the oven to give them the perfect bakery look!
